OUR Initiatives
At OURS, we are committed to building a culture that promotes green jobs and sustainable economic development by creating infrastructure rooted in safer environmental practices that help combat climate change. Through historical experiences and community engagement, we recognize that supporting Black and Brown women in rural communities is essential to creating long-term environmental, social, and economic resilience.
At the center of our work is ROOTED (Restoring Our Own Through Education & Demonstration) — the umbrella framework that guides all of our programs and initiatives. ROOTED reflects the story of who we are, how we grow, and the phases of restoration, education, leadership, sustainability, and community transformation that shape our mission. Through ROOTED, we create opportunities for individuals and communities to reconnect with the land, preserve cultural knowledge, strengthen local economies, and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Our initiatives are designed to strengthen rural communities through agriculture, leadership development, wellness access, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship. Each program creates opportunities for economic growth while helping communities become healthier, greener, and more self-sustaining.
1. Roots to Resilience Agricultural Initiative
The Roots to Resilience Agricultural Initiative is a community-centered program focused on increasing food access, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability through regenerative agriculture and land stewardship. The initiative transforms underutilized land into productive community gardens, educational farms, and shared agricultural spaces led by local residents.
Participants receive hands-on training in sustainable farming practices, soil health, food production, and agricultural entrepreneurship while learning how local food systems can strengthen community self-sufficiency and economic resilience. The program prioritizes historically marginalized residents, including Black farmers, rural youth, and low-income families, by creating pathways to leadership, land stewardship, and local food distribution.
Produce cultivated through the initiative supports food access efforts, local markets, and community wellness programs. In partnership with the Mims Community Center-Willington, we also co-host a Community Pantry and Seed Library that provides residents of McCormick County with access to fresh food resources, seeds, and educational materials that encourage sustainable home gardening and food security.
2. Rural Voices Advocacy & Leadership Academy
The Rural Voices Advocacy & Leadership Academy equips community members with the tools and knowledge needed to advocate for environmental justice, public health, land protection, and equitable rural development. Through leadership training, civic engagement workshops, public policy education, and community organizing sessions, participants learn how to effectively engage decision-makers and address challenges impacting rural communities.
The academy centers grassroots leadership and empowers residents to become informed advocates who can influence policies related to agriculture, infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and environmental conditions. Participants also receive mentorship opportunities and access to regional and national advocacy networks that strengthen community-driven change.
3. Community Access & Wellness Hub
The Community Access & Wellness Hub connects residents to essential resources that improve health, education, food security, and economic opportunity in underserved rural communities. Through mobile outreach events, wellness workshops, fresh food distributions, digital literacy support, and resource navigation services, the hub helps reduce barriers to critical support systems.
The hub also serves as a trusted gathering space where residents can access educational programming, emergency preparedness resources, and community support services. By strengthening local connections and expanding access to resources, the program promotes healthier, more resilient communities.
4. Heritage, Land & Legacy Education Program
The Heritage, Land & Legacy Education Program preserves rural history and cultural knowledge while educating future generations about environmental stewardship, land ownership, agriculture, and community sustainability. Through storytelling, intergenerational learning, historical preservation activities, and cultural education workshops, participants explore the deep connections between land, identity, agriculture, and social justice.
The program highlights the experiences and contributions of historically marginalized communities while encouraging youth engagement and leadership development. By honoring local history and cultural heritage, the initiative strengthens community pride, increases awareness, and inspires long-term investment in rural sustainability and collective well-being.s.
